Australia 1861(Sy) Gold Sovereign PCGS MS62

Code: 6675

KM-4. Queen Victoria Sydney Branch Mint. A scarce to rare date which becomes phenomenally rare in this state of preservation. In fact this is tied for highest with only 4 coins in this grade, none higher. PCGS has graded 71 coins of this date but only 15 in mint state and 4 in 62. This coin has to be seen to be fully appreciated, probably weighted on the obverse as the reverse is a blinding 63. Grades MS62 PCGS.

All Sydney Branch mint Sovereigns are notoriously difficult in high grades probably due to the design but perhaps also due to the brittle gold which was excavated locally. They often come in a myriad of bag marks and abrasions.
