Die numbers were introduced in 1871 to improve the Royal Mint's performance a kind of quality control. The number was assigned to the individual (die) operator so the idea was that when an error was spotted it could be traced back to the individual. Die numbers were also minted on Shillings and 6ds. At least this is the accepted belief. However it doesn't explain why the system was not utilised on the St.George reverse deign of the same years.
