Following the outbreak of the WWI the colony of GEA was besieged by allied forces which effectively (among other things) cut off supplies of new coins from Germany. In the emergency a mint was established in a railway workshop and unrefined gold from the Kironda mine was used to strike the 15 Rupien Gold coins.
